You should know this October 7 is the World Habitat Day! And why? Well, since 1986, this event has been celebrated to remember the right that everyone has to own a decent home. This fundamental right not only comes down to the fact that only we need a suitable place, but also the different species of animals in Cancun and around the world.
Discover the different species that abound in Cancun and what you can do to preserve your home. A fun fact? The beaches of Cancun would not be able to have white sand if it wasn’t for the coral reefs. The reefs are home to 33% of marine species, so you can imagine the importance of caring for them.
The marine animals that you will find without a doubt are hedgehogs, sailfish, sea turtle, lionfish, nurse shark, stingray, whale shark, starfish, and many more … Some tips you can try to protect their environment is watching out of beaches. Keep your trash with you or deposit it in the appropriate place, especially cigarette butts, avoid the use of plastics, and vote for an environmentally friendly sunscreen.
If we talk about birds, you can find macaws, flamingos, pigeons, seagulls, pelicans, black pheasant, toucans, blue climber, among others … Isla Contoy is a protected area since 1961 and is the primary home of birds in the Mexican Caribbean. Isla Contoy has different ecosystems, such as mangroves, lagoons, and deep forests; so you can imagine how many animals it has.
Let’s take care of nature and our Cancun, which, besides being our home, is home to many more animals. Take a break, take a catamaran ride, and enjoy the habitat and species of Cancun and its surroundings!
