Well, EVERYONE knows about Cancun’s “Hotel Zone”. That’s no secret.
As the name suggests…it’s where all the fancy, upscale hotels are. They’re very nice. But sometimes, travelers want a more Mexican experience.
Then they hear about this small island 3 miles off the coast of Cancun. It’s called Isla Mujeres (directly translated “Isle of Women”).
So why does everyone coming to Cancun, just HAVE to visit Isla Mujeres?
1. Stunning Seascape
To put it mildly…the waters between Cancun and Isla Mujeres are eye-opening! The pictures are impressive. But they don’t do the different hues of turquoise justice. You have to see it to believe it.
And in those striking waters…
You can find beautiful stingrays. Large schools of brightly colored tropical fish. You can even find tame catsharks once you get to Isla Mujeres!
2. Authentic Mexican Culture
There’s no more authentic experience than visiting Isla Mujeres. The smiling locals are sure to charm you with their friendly personalities.
And the food?
It’s actually an old Mayan recipe.
Which BTW, brings us to our next point…
3. Rich History
Yup. Isla Mujeres was ruled by the Mayans long ago. They even have a temple with Mayan statues. One of those statues is called “Ixchel”. She was an ancient fertility goddess of the Mayans.
Ixchel’s temple at Isla Mujeres sits on the most eastern part of ALL of Mexico. Why does this matter? Because the first rays of sunshine first strike her temple—before ALL of Mexico.
Pretty cool huh?
There’s also a history of pirates at Isla Mujeres. The most famous being Fermin Mundaca. You can learn more about him here.
Now you must be wondering…Yes! Isla Mujeres sounds very enticing, now…how do I get to Isla Mujeres?
First, you need to ask yourself, do I want to get to Isla Mujeres, in a fun and exciting way? Or is a non-exciting, (maybe even a little bit boring) way acceptable?
Let’s talk about the ordinary ways first (before talking about the extraordinary way)
- Ferry from Puerto Juarez
This is a pretty standard method. You can sit inside or outside on top. If you do that, make sure to bring a cap or sunglasses.
The route is nice, but the issue is, the lines are VERY long, and it’s kind of pricey.
- Ferry from Playa Tortuga
This is the same ferry from above, except that it departs from Playa Tortuga in the Hotel Zone.
It takes longer to get there, so it costs more.
- Car Ferry from Punta Sam
It’s not recommended you travel to Isla Mujeres with a car. It’s much more scenic to travel by golf-cart. But, if you must…Check out the carry ferry departing from Punta Sam.
The issue is, it’s VERY pricey and very slow. (you’ve been warned)
